Love after love
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Sísifo
Se puderes
Sem angústia
E sem pressa.
E os passos que deres,
Nesse caminho duro
Do futuro
Dá-os em liberdade.
Enquanto não alcances
Não descanses.
De nenhum fruto queiras só metade.
E, nunca saciado,
Vai colhendo ilusões sucessivas no pomar.
Sempre a sonhar e vendo
O logro da aventura.
És homem, não te esqueças!
Só é tua a loucura
Onde, com lucidez, te reconheças...

Buried Bones
I could take all the craziness out of you
That's what I loved you for
Take away all the oranges, greens and blues
That's what I loved you for
Take a look at me
You think it really could be that easy?
I mean, take a look at me
You think it really could be that easy for you?
I know about guys, I know where they live
And you're just the same
The ones that matter fight against themselves
But it's so hard to change
Hey, I could love you
Take all that love away from you
Hey, I could love you
Put you in this box I've made for two
So you could take all this craziness out of me
That's what you love me for
Well, I don't mean to laugh
But if you know all this
You must be halfway there
Well, like that dress tonight, you won't know as it falls from you
Turn around and it's winter, darling
Look in the mirror and it won't be you
So you're an old, old dog
You've been around the block
So many times
And it's the same old turns
Same old feelings straight down the line
Yeah, I can love you
Grab that leash and drag you to a place you'd never know
I know where my bones are buried
May take me a while, but I'd find my way home.
